MUSKEGON, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team scored three goals in the third period and outshot the Muskegon Lumberjacks by a 38-32 count in a fantastic comeback attempt, but ultimately fell, 4-3, inside Trinity Health Arena.
Muskegon struck first, capitalizing on a turnover at center ice, as Matvei Gridin ripped a wrister from the right circle 8:53 into the contest. A puck bounce off the mask of Ty Henricks made it a 2-0 game heading into the second stanza.
Joe Connor added a third to the Lumberjacks' tally with a power-play score from the right face-off dot at the 5:16 mark of the middle frame.
Team USA held a 10-0 advantage in shots through the first eight-minutes of the third period, and it was Will Horcoff (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) who finally capitalized, 5:14 in. Kristian Epperson (Mequon, Wis.) fed him a perfect pass on the near side and Horcoff blasted a one-timer to make it a 3-1 game.
Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) brought Team USA within one just two minutes later. Drew Schock (Green Bay, Wis.) chased down a loose puck in the neutral zone, connecting with Moore with a drop-pass at the point, who snapped one past Lumberjacks' goaltender Shikhabudtin Gadzhiev.
Cody Croal regained the two-goal Muskegon lead, scoring just after a successful Jacks penalty kill with 9:42 to play.
Harrison Boettiger (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) headed to the bench with 2:09 left in the game, and Moore scored his second of the period, tipping-in the rebound off an initial attempt by Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.), to bring the final score to 4-3.
The U17s are back at USA Hockey Arena Thursday, March 28 as they host the Madison Capitols. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
