MIDDLETON, Wis. - Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) netted his 19th and 20th goals of the season to lift the U.S. National Under-17 Team to a 3-1 win tonight over the Madison Capitols here tonight inside Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.) lit the lamp 7:37 into the contest. Kristian Epperson (Mequon, Wis.) forced a turnover in the defensive zone to get the play started and carried the puck into the zone, weaving through three Madison skaters. Will Horcoff (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) connected with Garrett Lindberg (Moorhead, Minn.) and a backdoor feed found Potter, who tipped it past Capitols neminder Carsen Musser to take a 1-0 lead.
John Stout found the equalizer 2:38 into the middle frame with a wrister from the left dot.
Fondrk put the U17s back on top late in the second period with a silky backhand tally down the right wing. He picked up the puck from Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.) and lifted his shot past Musser to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Fondrk doubled the U.S. lead almost exactly halfway through the final period for the first two-goal lead of the night. After a Madison defensive-zone mishap, Fondrk collected and roofed a wrister to seal the U17's victory.
Joey Slavick (Westland, Mich.) had 22 stops in net for his third USHL win of the season and fifth overall.
The U17s are back in action next Friday, April 12 as they travel to Youngstown for a Friday night faceoff against the Phantoms. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. ET from the Covelli Centre and the game will stream live on FloHockey.TV.
