Thirteen Players Selected From National Team Development Program in 2024 NHL Draft

Fifteen total players with NTDP ties taken over two days

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program saw 13 players selected in the 2024 NHL Draft over the past two days at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Additionally, a pair of NTDP alums were chosen by NHL clubs.

The NTDP had three total players hear their names called during the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft on Friday evening, starting with Zeev Buium (San Diego, Calif. / University of Denver) at number 12 overall to the Minnesota Wild. 

Following Buium were Cole Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) to the New York Islanders at 20th overall, and EJ Emery (Compton, Calif.) rounded out the Day 1 selections, picked 30th by the New York Rangers.

The NTDP was well represented in Round 2, seeing five skaters taken, led by defenseman Cole Hutson (Chicago, Ill.) to the Washington Capitals with the 43rd overall pick. He was followed by Max Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) to the Detroit Red Wings with pick 47. 

Forward Teddy Stiga (Sudbury, Mass.) went off the board to the Nashville Predators at 55th overall and Kamil Bednarik (Chicago, Ill.) was the second NTDPer taken by the New York Islanders in the first two rounds at pick 61. Defenseman Will Skahan (Woodbury, Minn.) marked the final selection of the second round, 65th overall to the Utah Hockey Club.

Forward Brodie Ziemer (Hutchinson, Minn.), captain of this year's U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team, was a third-round selection to the Buffalo Sabres with the 71st pick of the draft. 

Goaltender Nick Kempf (Chicago, Ill.) represented the NTDP in Round 4, going off the board at pick 114 to the Washington Capitals, marking the second NTDPer of the team's draft. 

It was the Red Wings' turn to double down on NTDP selections in the fifth round as they selected defenseman John Whipple (Minnetonka, Minn.) with the 144th pick of the draft.

NTDP alum and Madison Capitols forward Austin Burnevik (Blaine, Minn.) went to the Anaheim Ducks in round six to team up with Buium. Burnevik was second in the USHL with 40 goals scored in 2023-24. 

A trio of NTDPers were selected in the final round of the NHL Draft, including Lucas Van Vliet (Livonia, Mich.) selected by the host Vegas Golden Knights. Michigan native and Michigan State commit Austin Baker (White Lake, Mich.) was selected by his hometown Detroit Red Wings and Christian Humphreys (Pittsburgh, Pa.) completed the NTDP selections, going off the board to the Colorado Avalanche with the 215th pick of the weekend.
